My sister, Andrea Egan, is an affiliate for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and, having lived in NZ for quite some time, worked and still works primarily with island nations to help them navigate the problems presented by changing climates and patterns. She hangs with the likes of Neil deGrasse Tyson and does amazing work like this and this and this. She also runs her own non-profit, Prospekt Mira.
Every so often, I get the pleasure of working with Andrea on some of these projects. 'Steppe Days' was an event Andrea attended in Russia. I'll just say as I was cutting these little vignettes down and coloring them, it certainly made me want to pull my passport out and dust it off...
Andrea had quite a few stories about pickled watermelon and assorted (and of course plentiful) varieties of vodka. These videos only provide a tiny glimpse of the festivities to be sure, but I certainly enjoyed seeing the bits of it here.

How would one go about piclking watermelon anyway, but the better question is why would you? I guess I shouldn't knock it until I try it. I do, after all, have very real and frequent cravings for 納豆 (fermented soybeans)...
